China Labor Watch critically obtains a pulse and constructs detailed analyses of the labor conditions in China. The website is user friendly and has a wealth of diverse reports, from rigorous text-only documentation to multimedia reporting, which helps to make it student-friendly and meet a range of student needs.
The website is hard-hitting and does an excellent job of unearthing the inhumane practices of the manufacturers of the products that American citizens buy--and of course by extension, products that students buy. For a project, the students could skim the website and identify a Chinese company being scrutinized over its labor conditions. The students could then identify a product that is used in the States originally created by the company that students may be using or have seen others use. The students could then write a report on that product and analyze the labor practices behind that particular product, give a detailed analysis of the human rights violations, and offer end-user strategies enabling them to be more conscientious consumers as well as recommendations for the manufacturers to make company policy changes that balance the need for a competitive advantage in a world that is racing to the bottom while simultaneously meeting the needs of their workers. The students would then present this final report to the class.
