I discovered this fascinating website called "Samurai Archives--Japanese History Page." It's sort of a fan page for Samurai information and memorabilia, but it also includes serious historical and cultural studies, including almost 4000 articles. The site is in the Wiki format in which there is a cadre of editors who monitor submissions. There is a wealth of detailed information about Samurai traditions, much of it visual. It includes Samurai seals and banners, chronologies of emperors and noble families, codes of honor for many Samurai families, and much other information. I think this website would be a good resource for a student project on medieval Japan, and could easily be compared with similar websites on chivalry and knighthood in European society. I think this website would be very interesting for students. Small groups of students could choose a Samurai family and research its code, banner, seal, etc. There are also interesting articles on women in samurai culture, battles, and cultural developments.

Surfing through this page a found an essay on Buddhism and how it developed in Japan. Students will find very interesting to learn about the political ties to the religion and how it became popular. This topic would be a great idea for an entire unit on different religions in Asia and the world, as well as Buddhism in different places of the world. great resources.
