    USC's Brian Bernards will speak on Republican era (1911-49 on the mainland) Chinese literature. He's asked that everyone read Lu Xun's New Year's Sacrifice and Eileen Chang's (张爱玲) Golden Cangue (金锁记). He's also provided background information and discussion questions. Please print these out and bring them to the session. Catherine sent you these materials via We Transfer and email.

    The Golden Cangue is too large a file for the forum. You will need to download it via the We Transfer email that Catherine sent earlier.     As I began reading "The Golden Cangue", I had no idea what a cangue was. I looked it up and found this picture in order to help understand the title and its relevance in the story. While this might not be suitable for 6th grade, I could probably used some of the themes that were raised in the story. Themes could be survival, compromised love, envy/jealousy, duty v. self-fulfillment. This story has a wide array of characters that could be confusing, a perfect novella.
