    Confucianism is a philosophy first founded by Confucius. It emphasizes the importance of education, and respect between hierarchical relations like sons and fathers and many more.
    People who wanted to have a position in the Chinese government studied and memorized Confucius' teachings in order to obtain a job. His teachings had a great influence on the Chinese culture

    Confucianism is focused very heavily on ideas of hierarchy in society and family. There is a major emphasis placed on family and relationships and also that social order of hierarchy in the family as well. The ideals of Confucius were brought about during the Zhou period of the 500's bc. In my own understanding and teaching of the religion in my class, Confucianism places much of it's importance on family, rules of behavior in society, and reverence to the emperor as well as respect to those above you in social order.

    I wonder what Confucius teaches about the role of women in society. I know that Vietnam is heavily influenced by the Confucian thoughts. I used to hear proverbs recited for rote learning that taught the role of women in society in relation to others. The proverb goes something like this. "at home, women should obey the father. when they're married, women should obey their husbands. When their husbands die, women should obey their sons." Needless to say Vietnamese women do not follow this moral edict even in the remote sense. It is very interesting to see how a patriarchal society would say/teach things which would preserve their male dominance.
