I found everyone's presentation and discussion of projects on Friday afternoon to be interesting and useful, and I look forward to seeing the results of everyone's work. I hope you don't mind that I hope to use many of them in my own classroom!

    SUMMER 2013

Let me first start by saying what a great experience this was. I truly enjoyed the entire week. Not being a Language Art or History teacher, I felt like I might not be able to make connections with what was being presented. However, I felt quite comfortable with the content and dialogue that took place each and every day.

Being a Math teacher and offering an elective on Cultural Diversity, I struggled a little as to how I was going to incorporate the topics and information shared throughout the course of the week. Then it hit me…. The purpose of my culture class is to make comparisons and share difference between various cultures, traditions and ideologies.

For example, The Exclusion Act against Chinese….It is a perfect jumping off point to discuss exclusion of others throughtout US history and how it still is perpetuated today.

Confuciusism, Mohism, Doaism and Legalism are great ideas to use to discuss with my students as to what they believe to be the definition of a religion and a philosophy. I foresee that when I share with them the core values of these, most will be able to identify with some of teachings. Not looking to convert any, just wanting to share East Asian culture with my students.

I also hope to make a connection with my students and the manga and animee phenomeno, also discussions of K pop and J pop.. Why the attraction or dislike and also draw attention to US culture they enjoy and dislike.

Finally, I hope to have my students appreciate foreign films. I am not sure how this may go over. However offering them the opportunity to view and discuss them will again only broaden their culture experiences.

In closing, I hope that I can only hope that my students fine East Asian culture as intriguing as I have this last week.

Again thank you for the opportunity to expand my knowledge base on an area I knen so little about…
