I enjoyed the first class and found it very informative and interesting. I am interested in China's position in current affairs and potential in regard to up and coming events. I am facinated by the culture but know so very little about it.

I enjoyed the first class and the opportunity to meet several new people. I was amazed to find out that China is building one nuclear power plant each month. I couldn't help but think about the problems Japan had with its nuclear reactors after the recent tsunami. What would happen if a great earthquake struck China and had a detrimental effect on several of the nuclear power plants? What safety regulations are in place to deal with such a potential disaster? I'm just wondering.

I know this was. a while ago, but as I was watching the news this morning there was a report that a large amount of the debris from the Japanese tsunami should be arriving in California shortly, and that some of it has already arrived in Alaska. Pretty amazing how the ocean could cart all of that for so long without it sinking.

Seeing as how the nuclear issue was a focal point of the first seminar, I am reminded of just how close the matter in question is to us Southern Californians. A few weeks ago there was talk about the nuclear power plant right in our own backyard - the one at San Onofre. The reports in the media revolved around safety checks at the plant and potential closures. The report also included reports on plants in New York. I immediately thought about American standards of safety and how there is, at least generally, a high premium paid to safety and following the law (whether for ethical reasons or simply to avoid lawsuits). A follow-up question to our seminar, and in the spirit of the news of nuclear safety, I would be curious to know the safety record for China's nuclear program given the fact that so many plants are sprouting up, and have sprouted up, so exponentially.
