I read with interest a small article (Dec 30 LA Times) about the Uighur people (an ethnic minority of 9 million in China). The town of Pishan is very near China's border with Pakistan. The Uighurs are Muslims. Uighurs have become threatened as there are more and more Han Chinese moving into their area. It's difficult to tell exactly what happened -- different reports -- police are tight lipped. One story reported Islamic extremists were responsible for the killing other stories report something else triggered the killings
. It's difficult to tell. However, the article did report that the Chinese Communist Party has banned civil servants from observing Ramadan and attending mosque. Some reports are that Uighur homes are randomly searched for Korans and any evidence of what is deemed religious extremism.
