I am the coordinator of the new Chinese Culture Club at San Pedro High School. This is the first time I oversee a club in my life and I am not sure what activities to do.
So far we decided that we would like our own page in the year book, which costs $300. We started by selling orange chicken at the Oktober Fest and were able to pay off the food, the plates, the napkins, etc. and make a deposit at the finance office to start paying off the page.
We have seen China from the sky using the Google earth program and have seen pictures of different areas using a projector and my laptop http://www.hoylen.com/photos/2001-05-beijing/index.html
The students also saw a short power point presentation of philosophers and previous empires.
We have been practicing using chopsticks and have been listening to Chinese music.
The students in this club will be attending the Japanese American Museum, and since there are many differences between those 2 cultures, there are as well similarities and specially….. we are getting free buses to go there.
The club has a president, secretary, treasurer, etc.
Next time we meet, one of the students is going to show how to make paper lanterns using those little red paper envelopes used for Chinese New Year.
Also kids are voting for a film, but I still do not know which would be the most appropriate.
What else can we do?
I have so many students and I feel obligated to have fun activities ready because the president and vice-president are still trying to figure out how to control so many kids to be able to plan better.
