Kerala, the ‘God’s Own Country’, known as a consumer state is now an emerging shopping destination. A tourist has a mind-boggling range of handicrafts and other wares to choose from. Even though the numerous curio shops lined up along the beach resorts and other shopping arcades offer much to a visitor, the numerous shopping festivals are a must visit for a cultural enthusiast. The Kerala Tourism map is strewn with the different shopping festivals that take place at different parts of the year.

Onam, which falls during the months of August or September, is the prime shopping season in Kerala. During this season traders, manufacturers and merchants from distant places descend on this land to make use of the unique change in spending patterns of the people of this state.

The malls and shopping centers are literally crowded with people who wish to buy something new from the market. Some of the rare antiques doled out from the workshops of the renowned experienced craftsmen make their presence felt only during this part of the year. Not only that, the handicrafts from other states also arrive to cash in on the shopping boom.

The typical Kerala handlooms woven in the traditional weaving patterns have many takers. These clothing materials are made from natural silk and cotton threads. They are not only good for the body but do not cause any allergy normally associated with the use of synthetic clothing material.

Almost all tourists returning after a visit to this place have some rare handicraft to carry back, which will act as a remembrance for his visit to this famous landmark.

Thank you for bring Kerala, and India, to the forum and discussion of life in that State. Unfortunately, it seems that our East Asia program is zeroed-in on China-Japan-Korea. Is it possible to have a bit more diveristy and bring in some lecturers on India, Pakistan, Thailandia, Cambodia, Laos, etc. It think it would helpful for all of us to have a wider perspective on Asia, even though China is the Tiger of Asia.. India certainly has great culural, historical, religious and philosophical contributions to the global cultural riches.
