An article in yesterday’s Los Angeles Times titled “Chinese Couples Break the Silence Over Infertility” details how couples in China who are struggling to conceive have more options in terms of reproductive services, and as the article states, are more open to using them.
The article explains that in the past when it came to reproduction related issues the focus of China’s health services had been on birth control. However, according to one Chinese medical official, there is now more of a balance in which childless couples may now receive fertility treatment.
In fact, the article goes on to state that there is such a demand for fertility services that many facilities are opening up that don’t have the necessary permits and or trained personnel.
A couple of interesting things to note from the article, how fertility clinics are heavily advertising their services to the public through television and newspaper ads, even going as far as hiring movie stars and pop singers to speak in their ads; and how even though the adoption of Chinese babies are adopted by the thousands by foreigners Chinese couples don’t see this as an option. Unfortunately, the article does not really go on to explain why they don’t see this as an option.
