DEPARTURES Magazine dedicated its entire October 2011 issue to luxury travel in China.
Departures magazine is a luxury magazine that regularly focuses on luxury travel in several countries in each issue: Europe, Eastern Europe, some Central and South American countries, the Middle East, and Africa.
Thus it was a unique undertaking for this "goto" magazine for the luxury traveler to dedicate an entire issue to one country: China.
As Melissa Chiu stated in this issue, "To some extent, the idea of Asia is a construct, just as the phrase 'The New Asia' is," Chiu said. "in fact, I sometimes think New Asia is a projection of all our fears and fantasies."
In 2005, Departures magazine published and entire issue about China entitled "CHINA: THE LUXURY GUIDE TO BEIJING, HONG KONG, SHANGHAI & BEYOND" - this was prior to the spectacle that was to be the 2008 Beijing Olympics. However, 20 years ago famous people often lived modestly. Today, they have large studios with two Ferraris in the driveway.
In addition, Hong Kong and Shanghai were the places to visit for luxury and few ventured outside of the realm of its high rises and expensive malls. Now tours for any income include luxury hotel stays in Bejing and in other lesser known provinces and that is what Departures seeks to relay.
