Monday after our orientation, I attended a full day Suicide Intervention workshop put on by the Alhambra School district and led by the school psychs. After having been working with many suicide threats and 5150's, especially this school year, the movie Saturday evening and then the subsequent workshop on Monday solidified my interest in learning more about any interventions that work and don't work in China today. It was good to know that the difficult topic of teen or young adult depression and the effects on families are an issue in China, as it is here. As a high school counselor, I am anxious to learn more about how the China school districts help their at risk students. The actor in the movie was older then high school age, but drug use and depression are real and serious concerns we need to be more ready able to respond and recognize. I will seek additional information with these topics on our trip.

    Greetings LSheridan & All,
I too truly appreciated the film as well as the subject matter. Like many other issues and concerns in China, information is not readily available and rarely discussed. Had it not been for the additional comments made at the end of film with respect to the actor's fate, I wouldn't have known of the outcome. A great presentation of a very difficult subject matter. This past Saturday's teacher workshop on the importance and challenges of getting it right also reminded me of this film. On a side note, knowing that Alhambra Unified is not a large district with many high schools, 2 of my 3 teenagers attend Alhambra High. Hope to chat with you more on the study tour.
