Ok, I'll try this again. Apparently I took too long to type last time and timed out! All was deleted.

I appologize for the delay. As soon as I recovered from the jet lag, I left town for a work shop.

Today we went to the Temple of Heaven. As we walked into the park, we saw many retired people dancing. Caroline and I joined in. She caught on a lot faster than I did! I loved the ladies with the jingling metal skirts. Mike became quite skilled at the feathered hacky sack. We all took an interest in learning and purchasing the "Taiji Rouli Ball Racket". (I plan to bring mine to Pismo this weekend, along with the kites I purchased in Xi'an.) It is so wonderful that people stay active after retiring from the work force. This spirit should be an example to follow for us as well as our students. These activites are so much healthier than video games.

We walked on to see men playing different games, and women knitting and chatting.

Jean walked us to the Heavenly Center Stone. We learned that it was surronded by multiples of nine rings, to symbolize the nine heavens. This could be an excellent math lesson. I plan to share this with my partner. (She teaches my students the math and science.)

I believe it was on our way out that Manny purchased his infamous Mao watch. It lasted way longer than any of us expected.

Our lunch included a lovely dance at the end.

I'm doing this in segments to make sure my work is not timed out again.

We were given free time for the rest of the day. Many of us went to the flea market. Thank you again Kyle for taking our purchases back to the hotel. It was greatly appreciated! Caroline found some fascinating comic books to share with her students. I just had a great time interacting with people. We had quite a chalenge trying to find cat figurines. We couldn't quite get the tone right to be understood. Saying cat in Mandarin, not so easy. It wasn't until we meaow like cats that we were understood. We all had a good laugh. Vendors began bringing any cat items they has up to us.

Next we divided into those that wanted KFC, and those that wanted dumplings. I was in the dumpling group. Clay tried to take us to a place he had enjoyed in the past, but sadly, it was gone. The place we found was very tastey!

I know we all had a difficult time keeping our eyes open, but the Kung Fu show was well worth it. I enjoyed this show the most out of the three was saw during our trip. The story line would be prefect for my 6th graders to follow.

    Hi Folks,

The system will time you out if you don't post or move about the system for ten minutes. That's to keep people from inadvertently staying logged in after they leave a public computer.

If you're writing an extended post that will take more than 10 minutes to write, you can always just hit the preview button, that displays your post as it will eventually appear. You then hit the edit button and it takes you back to the post entry screen. Of course, you could also use a text editor or word processor to write out your thoughts. This has the advantage of offering spell/grammar checking.

Thanks for getting us started on what for many was a memorable day. Perhaps Amanda and others could weigh in on some of these questions (Amanda has touched on many of them) --

-- why are some Chinese dancing in the park? what music were they dancing to? what does this suggest about life in China?

-- what were the games being played? how do the marketeers fit in?

-- besides dancing and other exercises, what other recreation activities did you observe?

-- describe the setting, even street corner parks have people dancing, practicing taijiquan, qigong, and martial arts

-- what ideas/values are conveyed in the design of the various parts of the Temple of Heaven complex (numerology, construction

Many of you have interesting photos from this visit. Please choose one or two and share them by attaching them.
