KeymasterMy Fellow Colleagues, I realize that the title of this thread looks like a diagnostic dose of Axis 2 from the the Diagnostical & Statistical Manual version 4 ( DSM-R4 ) of the American Psychological Association. This is not a diagnosis, but some thoughts on our collective experience & what we believe we should act on. I believe Strand titles are like headlines where perhaps some may ignore them but others are drawn into the manuscript kicking and screaming. Then are grateful for reading the tome. I am hopeful that this will be true in this case
The Institute has had a profound effect on me. I will be forever changed as a result of this experience. Even though the Institute ended just a few days ago it feels as if it took place in a different distant Time and Place. Although I am back in San Diego with many tasks at hand I am reflecting on that experience continually since I've returned. My views on that part of the world and their peoples have been drastically altered. My teaching practice in secondary and graduate level has been informed tremendously.
Clayton said it best on our last day, when he pronounced almost in a "benediction" like manner....
"You are all infected... and now you need to spread it to others" When it comes to spreading infection it is best to so when you are most contagious and I am going to strike while my hammer is the hottest (TRANSLATED RIGHT FLIPPIN NOW ) In the application process I shared that I would take the lessons learned on a vertical level to the district resource gurus in both Language Arts & the Social Sciences. I added that I would share the information horizontally with the teaching staff at the Lincoln Centre for the Arts with the implication that students would be the ultimate benefactors of my experience at the Institute. At the graduate level where I teach curriculum and instruction methodology I would be using the analogy of teaching people the fish so that they could teach others ( to fish ).
Now I believe I have another venue that can assist in this dissemination process. I have contacted the respective Deans at two Universities that I teach at with the proposal of me providing professional development to the academic core in order that they become infected as well... and then infect oursI am grateful to allocate the time and effort for this endeavor.
Unfortunately I have to leave you a negative note. I am presenting at the conference this weekend on parent involvement and its role in increasing academic achievement. The Chair of the conference is in elementary principal. I spoke to him yesterday & you may have already guessed I offered him the proposal I offered the Universities. I was shocked at his response!
He stated "that with the current standards there is no room to bring Asia into the syllabus" I mumbled to myself (HUH...HUH.@*#@&!!@#@#???#***^@#) Then I responded the studying of Asia could be a great vehicle for reaching the standards and most importantly engaging students. He tersely added.... "I'll have to chew on that a long time before I could give you an answer" I am interested in what my fellow colleagues feedback is regarding " Profound Effect Coupled With Robust Infection"
