GuestIt would be wonderful if you wrote down your personal memories of the time. History is so much richer when told by the people who lived it. Maybe there's a book in you, waiting to be written! Suzanne Lopez

GuestYes, it's true! The more primary sources the better.
By the way, I purchased one of the gold Mao pins on our visit to the Pacific Asian Museum and will wear it as an artifact when teaching about 20th century chinese history.August 18, 2010 at 1:19 am #23670Anonymous
GuestKelly,Somehow it doesn't surprise me that you are a communist..but could you please keep communism out of classroom?

Xin, Somehow I missed this post. Looking at that robust collection of Mao buttons sent me time traveling. What a collection!!! At my school we have the tech capability to take one of those small buttons and blow it up to a 24" x 36". I am having a difficult time deciding which one to choose. They are all very unique and of course very red. I really like the ones with MAO's profile. Perhaps Xin, since you are far more familiar with this collection than myself could share your opinion on which one I choose. I am putting that web address in my favorites.

SpectatorThanks, Xin, for the images of Mao buttons. Here's a book that deals with those emblems in the larger context of the Mao cult:
Scrift, Melissa. The Biography of a Chairman Mao Badge. 2001.
This 1996 article by Bill Bishop is helpful. Bishop has gone on to be a financial writer, consultant, and blogger. His blog Sinocism is at: http://www.sinocism.com

GuestSuzanne, you are always so encouraging of those to share their personal life stories through writing. I hope to read your memoir one day
