GuestWow! That is definitely a great hook for a discussion in a government class...I am always trying to get my students to see trends between kingdoms, empires, and countries. Especially when we study Rome, my students make many comparisons to our country. It is an eye-opener to have a 12 year old recognize potentially detrimental faults in American government. This ad really made me think!

GuestWhen all else fails-national chauvinism serves as a binding, blinding agent to distract us from a critical look at the policies and practices that have culminated in the current economic debacle. This would be a great piece to use in a government class. I wonder if an English class is the place to explore the idea of objectivity in the media. Is it even possible when we consider the choice of language and imagery not just in commercials but even in the seemingly neutral sources of media.

GuestI'm an English teacher and we discuss the media and propaganda when we read Animal Farm, so this would be perfect to use since it covers several different types of propaganda techniques. Great find.

GuestI hadn't thought about this video until the last session. After hearing the struggles that China had, the "shame," and the way it allowed itself to fall behind the rest of the world, this video is again an eye opener and a testament to how far China has come to becoming a world power once again.

KeymasterJust saw this ad last night, and I found the link for it on-line. It could definitely be used in the Persuasive Unit as it highlights the Safety and Security elements of persuasive techniques, and you could also compare and contrast the China on display to present day China and the China of previous eras. Seems like an excellent jumping off point for discussion. Thoughts?

GuestThis ad was the one that started a lot of discussion in my class. I recieved a lot of questions about China taking over the US. I was able to answer the question in class with the information Prof. Dube gave us on the first week of class. It was a fun discussion, I don't think my students curiosity was satisfied, but I will return to the issue later in class.
