    Looking through our book of information on the various philosophies, it seems like Confucianism has a lot going for it. For one it was adhered to for over 2,000 years, over successive dynasties. Another thing that struck me was that Confucius advocated that the way to change society was to cultivate your own virtue and place your family in the correct order. Correct order is sons obey fathers, wives obey husbands, younger sons are benevolent to older sons, and wives toward younger sons. This of course may be very politically incorrect in our society.

    I'd really like to sell Confucianism on the idea of education. I mean we're all educationally oriented, right? We might get stuck by the other members in terms of established hierarchy, but the Confucian teachings don't necessarily preclude upward movement in the social hierarchy. What is also clearly in our favor is the idea of shared benevolence. Kinda the golden rule in application it seems. Any thoughts?

    The loyalty could be seen as either yay or nay. For the elders..it's a positive but 'A women was to be loyal first to her father, then to her husband, and finally to her sons' could be a hard case to justify. But I do agree on the education aspect of the philosophy and the structure of respect it brought to the family.

    In what way is hierarchy a problem in comparison with the other teachings, Mr. Diaz? There is no problem at all.

    Don't forget we all "live" in patriarchal times when everyone is ok with the status of the woman. We are not discussing the issues from a modern point of view.

    Although my name is not on this group list, I worship Confucius very much. I was brought up in China. Greatly influenced by the Confusian teaching philosophies from generation to generation, we learn to be humble as a human being. There is one famous saying from one of Confucius' teaching philosophies: There must be one master except for you while walking with other two people together. That means: when you have a conversation with somebody else, you always learn something from them.

    From the Mohist perspective I agree with the argument against Confucius family hierarchy. Mohism takes perspective takes on the "universal love" as a means to stop war. The focus on the family rather than the common good of everyone creates competition against each other and take resources for the good of a family than community.
