I just finished reading this primary document towards the back of the reader. What a useful piece for either 10th or 11th grade history and English classes. There are numerous ways of employing the document:1) Integrated into the social studies standard 10.7 on the rise of fascism standard is the most obvious. It really illustrates the hyperbolic sense of nationalism and the subjugation of the Japanese people to the Emperor. MOreover, the growing support of the Nazi regime and Mussolini's fascism is clearly evident, hence numerous parallels can be drawn as ultimately leading to WWII. The inflammatory language and demonization of Western Europe and the United States provide fertile ground for analyzing rhetorical devices in the piece in any English class. Finally, dissecting the document could be helpful in juxtaposing the jingoism and xenophobia on either side of the Pacific ocean so that students can compare the dialectical dynamic of the Japanese towards Americans and similarly the American reaction against Japanese in the US.

Thank you for the resource. I will take a closer look at that piece. I'm sure I use it to address the content standards in both my regular World History course as well as the AP World History course I teach.

This comparative exercise would definitely help address one of the strategies we are currently working with on my school site. This would help my students get a deeper understanding of the dynamic between these countries as well as the relevant historical eras.

Thanks for informing us! I am always interested in comparing different regimes and histories in my classroom, especially my 10th grade world history. I am more comfortable with European history so this will be helpful!
