This was a very interesting and informative article because I got to see the perspective about suicide of the Japanese and it was staggering to learn that they consider suicide as a form or terminating one's life with honor. It is a very different perspective from the western cultures because religious ideas make suicide a taboo. However, it is also a problem because suicide should not be occuring under any circumstance. Cheers.

I'm not rooting for anyone to commit suicide, but here in the US we recently went through a catastrophic fiscal crisis in which some very senior officials in banks and government caused the economy to crash. Millions of working/middle class people lost trillions of dollars when property values plummetted, pensions were appropriated by management, and jobs were lost. This crisis can be clearly laid at the doorstep of the financial ruling class, and yet they didn't get as much as a reprimand, much less the public humiliation that might have resulted in suicide in Japan. Our corporate elite often boasts about being accountable, but in fact they have resisted any form of accountability.

Thank you for sharing this article. I am concerned with the amount of suicides in Japan. It is crazy that the minister would chose to commit suicide on the World Suicide Prevention Day. I feel from reading the article that Japanese commit suicide to take some type of final stance. This is the way they apologize, protest, or take revenge? I do believe that if they rule out suicide as a way to claim life insurance, then maybe suicide ratios in Japan would decrease.
