GuestI believe what Confucius said, and I also believe I was born with some of his ideas, such as " If three of us are walking together, at least one of the two others is good enough to be my teacher. " I think as an individual, instead of finding faults with other people, you can always find good points or strength from other poeple. Don't do to others what you don't want others do to you. Or Do as you would be done by. Treat people with friendship and honesty, you can make people happy and yourself happy. I often share these quotes with my students and I got positive responds.

GuestSome good resources for developing a lesson on Confucious are in History Alive! Chapter on THREE CHINESE PHILOSOPHIES and from the ANCIENT WORLD text (McGraw Hill) p.248 and p249) They have a good excerpt from the Analects of Confucius. I am doing my lesson for this class on comparing and contrasting the Chinese philosphies of Conucius, Daoism and Legalism. I really love the lesson plan they have in History Alive Teacher's Edition on this and so am planning on revising that so that it is more original for me. I know I better get cracking so I can get it in on time. I am not sure how to proceed. Do we just post our lesson and then ask someone to review it?

GuestI am very interested in seeing your lesson, but couldn't open the zip is it possible that you can re-send it in a different format? Thanks.

GuestAs one of your assigned reviewers for the curriculum project, I enjoyed reading your lesson plan. It is a brilliant idea to share creative writing and to perform a folktale skit to local kindergarteners. I know that it is quite time-consuming, laborious effort from both you and your students, so I understand that you need more time to cover this thematic unit, “Confucius Influence in Japanese Mind.” However, since it is for Japanese III/AP class, you should target foreign language standards rather than in-depth content knowledge in world history or in philosophy within the time constrain that we are all facing in our academic calendar. If you have students write a folktale and memorize the lines of the skit at home for homework assignment, you could presumably shorten the unit to 1 or 2 weeks. With necessary grammar and vocabulary lessons prior and along with this thematic unit, I suppose it is feasible. Congratulations, and I hope you have a great summer!

Guestrkim,
Thank you for reviewing my lesson plan.
(How were you assigned to mine? I have not assigned to anyone yet? How did you find out?)
Foreign Langauge Content Standards are posted in my lesson plan (2nd page): They are known as 5 'C': Communication, Culture, Connection (Interdisciplinary), Comparison, Community. Content base Thematic Units cover easily all the standards, so this is the ideal format to teach foreign language. Under the 'Connection' I can teach students any other subjects, such as Economics, Geography, History, Philosophy..only limitation I have is to teach students in the target language..of course in Japanese.July 9, 2011 at 2:09 pm #27096Anonymous
GuestI noticed that my logo is different from others..that might be something to do with the reason you couldn't open my word file?
At the same time, some could open the same file.. rkim viewed my file and left the comment..??
Maybe I should re-save the word file with 'doc' (used mac?), let me know if you couldn't see it yet.July 9, 2011 at 2:18 pm #27097Anonymous
GuestThank you for the information of History Alive and 'ANCIENT WORLD' text. (if we don't use the textbook in our school, how can we view or copy the pages? Is there any textbook library?)
There are so many way to cover the Chinese Philosophers, I think. I put it together due to my foreign language content standards in mind. As I mentioned to rkim's reply, I need to teach them in Japanese...so decided to focus in Kanji (Chinese characters). I would like to see how you cover the 4 philosophers. I just posted, (attach your word file). Some said 'was assigned' I don't know how they got assigned..Let me know when you find out.

KeymasterThis is my rough draft.
I have been putting this Thematic Unit (including 2 WebQuests: 1 posted at wikispaces.com) together so that I could actually use this next year. It is very time- consuming to find all the resources but it is worth doing so. When I created an outline of this Thematic Unit, I could have estimated this to be around 4 weeks. Very sorry that I couldn't finish them all completely, but you will get a sense of it.
Should I shorten this to 6 day Lesson Plan and re-submit it again by 11th?My shorter version of this Lesson Plan should cover: 1)examine moral lessons of folktales, 2)mak a Confucius folktale and the class presentation. (I won't be able to touch too much on other Chinese philosophers other than Confucius.)

GuestThank you for your comment. It is true that many of Confucius values are universal, such as, don't kill, don't steal, and give word to people..that made me think about how I can modify my lesson plan into more culture based Thematic...instead of dealing with only China, Korea and Japanese folktales, I might be able to expand the resources into more world regions of the Ideologies teachers don't usually cover in school, so it might be worth trying. Students could become more familiar with moral values of Islam, Hinduism, and African natives (expect to find more similarities with Shintoism). This will be a lesson plan of Cultural Tolerance on top of Chinese Philosophies!
