Last night I watched PBS's presentation of Global Voices, "Vietnam: The Next Generation." It showed eight young people who live and work in Vietnam today and explored the challenges (and advantages) they experience as a result of this communist country's compromises with capitalism. It was very hopeful about the lives of these people and for modern Vietnam's future. I strongly reccommend it to anyone who watched the recent documentary on Mai Lai that was mentioned in an earlier blog. It helped me to reconcile the guilt and disillusion I was feeling after that documentary.

THAT (the Mai Lai documentary recently on public tv) was incredible. Powerful, sad, amazing. EVERYONE should see that movie.

I agree with you. Being Vietnamese American, I was always curious about the real Vietnamese culture in Vietnam. I now could connect with my cousins via Facebook. They even have their own version of American Idol. Even though Vietnam is progressing economically, at 6% (just behind China), I still think there are a lot of people who need help. Some of my relatives (that I have little knowledge of) barely make a dollar a day! What is disheartening is that there are Bentleys and Mercedes dealers popping up everywhere in Saigon, while the people in the rural areas are starving. SAD!

Another comment about Vietnam- My step-father is a Vietnam veteran. Some of the stories he shared with me about the atrocities of this war I simply couldn't stomach. The horrors that he witnessed, the acts of stone cold violence, the stark terror of being blown apart have impacted him mentally physically and spiritually. He has to take medicine for the rest of his life. He doesn't sleep well, he breaks out in cold sweats out of nowhere and he's very paranoid. Watching the documentaries do have a big impact on me but hearing it up close and personal from someone I respect and love is heart rendering.

Vietnam appears to be one of the immerging countries of Asia. I find it interesting that a country that was engaged in war with the United States until not that long ago is now trading quite freely with the United States. I see a simialr trend with Cuba. Both of these countries have not at all shifted their policies and yet we are warming up to them. Strange.
