Having just experienced a 7.2 earthquake so close to home this article makes me contemplate the expense of a 7.2 centered in LA and the possible Tsunami that it would send toward Japan and vise versa.

It would be interesting for my students to do a double line plot chart in Excel comparing large earthquakes over the last 200 years for LA and Japan.

An interesting article about the relationship of earthquakes and the preparations we take as a culture to deal with them. In southern California we too have become complacent about the possibility of the "big one". I do believe that the government's role in preparedness would also "expose" our shortcomings.
Here is an interesting link to a CBC video about how Japan handles earthquake preparedness.

While I was in Japan, I visited an elementaryt school. On the day I visited, the school was having an earthquake drill. Let me tell you, these guys make our drill seem like hopscotch. THey are a well-oiled machine. It is not surprising, I suppose, that a culture that places such a large emphasis on discipline and experiences earthquakes that often, would be all about earthquake drills.

And here I was thinking that California was the earthquake capital of the world. The Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 was way before my time and not mentioned in any of my history classes. This is important history that I should of been taught and right now I'm feeling cheated out of a well rounded history education. I'm so grateful for all that I've learned in this seminar.
I love the myth of the Shinto God Kashima and the grotesque catfish. I don't know how citizens of Tokyo can be so complacent about sitting near two fault lines and above another. I still want to visit, but I'm going to have to keep it short .
