Welcome - Let's get acquainted!

Hi-- My name is Diane Paull-- I teach at Educational Partnership High School - an independent study high school in Long Beach. -- I have been at this particular school for -- yup -- 20 years. We teach at risk students. Before this assignment - -when I first started teaching I taught junior high -- yes -- back then it was called junior high - in both Los Angeles and Hollywood.

I am Nancy Stansbury - the oldest, if not the wisest, of the South Bay Spring Seminar students. I teach a three period Humanities Block at Manhattan Beach Middle School. One period is Reading, one period is Writing, and one period is Social Studies. China is an important part of the 6th grade Ancient History curriculum and our literature text includes myths, legends, and short stories which have Asian themes. I am hoping that this seminar will help me to develop interesting lessons that will increase my 6th graders' appreciation of the East and make relevant connections between its history and my students' world.

Howdy... I am Victoria Damrel and I teach visual arts in an IB high school in Lynwood. Firebaugh received it's International Baccalaureate status in 2008 and has been teaching Mandarin Chinese since that authorization. We sent a cadre of students to China last summer for three weeks and all my students who attended came back with a real appreciation for Asia and China. I have attempted to incorporate the arts of Asia into my lessons, as the majority of art history I have studied has focused on Western Art. I look forward to learning more an collaborating with you all.

Hi, My name is Pat Rice. Tossed by the winds of fate and contracting economies, I have taught many grades and subjects from Detroit to LA. I hope to put down a few roots at Gardena High School, LAUSD where I currently teach 9th grade Science and Health and which I really enjoy.
My background is in engineering so I am grounded in worldly practicalities, but I have also worked as a writer, so my head is often found in the clouds.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Jill Botelho. I am a 9 Grade World History teacher at Mission Vista High School. I teach a survey course it covers wide range of topics. Our regional foci are Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. While I review and cover standards from grades 6,7,10, I incorporate as many current issues as possible. I am excited to have the opportunity to study east Asia in depth, as I understanding this region is critical to today's students.

I am Kerri Atkins. I teach 7th and 8th grade social studies at Parras Middle School in Redondo Beach. I took this class because I don't have a very strong "Asian" history background and since I teach about China and Japan in 7th grade I thought I should probably know a little more about the cultures!
