Situation: My father has broken a law knowingly. He knew it was a serious violation of the law. I know about it. He knows tht I know.

Question: As a legalist, what do I need to do about it?

Answer: I love my father. This is tough. He is the one who has always told me that the good of the government is more important than personal or family good. It has taken some training to persuade myself and steel myself emotionally, I truly believe that. I know what I must do. I must turn him in. He must be exposed and pay for what he has done. That is what is best for all.

Aside: Articles that I have read about the Cultural Revolution and family relationships were brutal. Children were so brainwashed that they turned in violent hatred and action against their parents. I can only imagine that the time of Qin Shih Huang di who supported this theory of legalism was the same. He accomplished a lot but was brutal against those whom he thought were not in agreement with him. (See a summary of Qin shih Huang di for more information.)

As a legalist, I am not in as much of a quandry as those who follow the Confucian or Mohist philosophy. My education has given me great faith in the laws, so the first steps I would take would be to deeply investigate the laws to see if there was a loop hole, or a legitimate path that could be taken to forgive or even pardon my father.

If all my efforts fail, I will not turn him in. The effects on my family would be extreme, and I would probably put myself in peril. I cannot allow my children to bear the burden of his perfidy. If I feel I must bring him to justice, I would arrange for another of his peers to accuse him. He would probably guess who arranged this, but would understand my position.
