Today is Children’s Day in China in honor of the thousands who died and were orphaned in the earthquake. Fox News reporter, Yanmei Xie, visited China and reported on the government’s efforts. She reported that the Chinese have high praise for the government. However, she added that the government is facing challenges dealing with rumors spread through the internet and text messages about aftershocks, disease, and another earthquake.
As a result of China’s One-Child policy, many families suffered the loss of their only child in the quake. A reported 7,000 children died without siblings. I wonder the likelihood of whether these families can or will have another child. Of course this cannot replace their loss, but I am curious about the circumstances as well as the government’s position. I recently posted about an NPR interview with several Chinese youth who are the only child in their families. I realize that due to this policy, the impact of the death of thousands of children in the earthquake has a tremendous impact on Chinese society, present and future.
The young female reporter explained that the Chinese government is asking the people to “trust them” during this difficult time rather than rumors. This must be very difficult for them to do in light of the current situation and the impact on their personal lives. Although she stated that the government is doing a good job, it seems preoccupied with controlling rumors. How important is this really given the current situation?
