He went to China as a peace corp volunteer in 1996 and stayed for the past 10 years. He has written 3 books on China. The latest Country Driving is forthcoming.

Amy Tan's "Village on the Edge of Time", shows the impact modernization/capitalism has had on a rural village."New Great Walls" by Ted Fishman is about the impact of the Beijing Olympic building program.
"Bitter Waters" by Brook Larmer concerns the ecological destruction of the Huang He and attemps to save it. The last article , "The Road Ahead" by Peter Hesseler, reflects the author's views regarding China's future.
