Since I missed the session on Japanese Literature and the Rise of Modern Japan, I visited Little Tokyo with my Japanese American friend (who is the 3rd or 4th generation Japanese American). Little Tokyo is well reserved by L.A. Japanese community with its neat design and organizations. It is probably one of the most interesting places to observe how the community presents itself across different eras. The setting, according to my friend, isn't changed a bit. There are grocery stores, candy stores, restaurants, and other businesses around the courtyard of Little Tokyo. You can easily trace the influence of Japanese culture, particularly Japanese pop culture, on the commodities sold in Little Tokyo. These commodities showcase the idea of being precise, emphasize the fine presentation, and display the skills required to make miniature objects having millions of details.
I also have to mention Japanese American Museum next to Little Tokyo courtyard. The museum present this exhibition: http://www.janm.org/exhibits/ffd-san-antonio/ http://www.janm.org/exhibits/ffd-san-antonio/">http://www.janm.org/exhibits/ffd-san-antonio/
