    Hello everyone,

    Welcome to the web discussion forum for the USCI/NCTA Fall 2009 "East Asia Since 1800" seminar - South Bay!

    This is a space in which we can all get acquainted prior to the seminar. To that end, it would be great if you can reply to this post and provide the following:

    1. Your name
    2. Your school and teaching assignment
    3. A photo (if you so desire; see attached "Using the Web Forum Guide" for detailed instructions)
    4. Anything else about yourself that you would like to share

    We will be posting information relevant to the seminar here, so please check in regularly. Also, for the ease and convenience of all forum users, please limit the number of new threads you create. If something can be shared, discussed or expanded upon under an existing thread, let's do so.

    Well, my name is Kristian Engle, and I teach English II and AVID at Peninsula High School in Palos Verdes. I am looking forward to taking something from this course back to the classroom. We have such a large East Asian population at our school, many of whom are international students, that I want them to feel better represented in the curriculum.

    We have quite a bit of the asian population as well. As a matter of fact, we have been informed that the middle school is going to teach Chinese or Spanish next year to 6-8th graders. This has been quite an interesting scenario. It has brought up many factors to our school. It is a great opportunity for students to be able to learn language, but I am not sure how they are going to get this off the ground. I think it's great to give an opportunity, but how will it be able to work???

    i teach ap art history, film history and music appreciation to 12th graders at mira costa high in manhattan beach.

    i came on a little too strong when i used the word 'hate' to describe my feelings about peninsula high. sorry. 🙂 should have said i have a very strong dislike towards that school. why? simply because we never won a game against them when i used to coach football at costa. i'll try to be better.

    i'm hoping, by taking this seminar, to introduce more asian art, films and music into all of my classes and get a better understanding on a personal level about this part of the world.

    My name is Karen Ramirez, and I teach 6th grade English, Science, and Art at Casimir Middle School in Torrance.

    I recently took a trip to China this summer, and enjoyed it a lot.. I'll look for a picture to post from my trip!

    Hello,

    My name is Dorine Nilsson. I teach at North high school in Torrance. I am teaching World History and World Geography this year. In past years I have also taught U.S. History and sheltered U.S History.

    I also have my masters in Cross-Cultural teaching and enjoy the challenges of teaching limited English-speaking students. I am always looking for ideas and comments about teaching English-language learners content. I appreciate any information or suggestions any of you have to offer.

    Hello, I'm Joanne Dragich. I teach 12th grade English at Firebaugh High School in Lynwood. I'm very excited about this seminar.

    I hope to bring back ideas for re-vamping our DP and MYP reading lists to include more Asian writers. I also want a better background so I can teach the novels in the proper historical and cultural context.

    I'll look forward to seeing you all again on the 16th.
