Keymaster"Power and Glory: Court Arts of China's Ming Dynasty"
San Francisco Asian Art Museum
June 27 - September 21, 2008
This exhibit will display more than 240 objects - including jewelry, porcelain, lacquerware and vases from one of China's most important dynasties that held power from 1368 to 1644. The objects hail from Beijing's Palace Museum, the Shanghai Museum, The Nanjing Municipal Museum and from the collections of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. The "don't miss" piece is the Dragon Robe found unfinished at the Imperial Palace Museum in Beijing. Admission is $12.00, but free the first Tuesday of every month.

GuestThe Los Angeles Times reported in November that in 1989, the Getty Research Institute received a proposal to purchase 20 engravings from 18th century China depicting the interaction of European and Chinese influences. The offer came at a time when there was not much interest expressed in Asian Art. The prints themselves were considered oddities in that they were detailed engravings of European Style Pavilions built in Beijing for a Chinese Emperor by Jesuit Missiosnaries.
Eighteeen years later, the prints have formed the foundation for the exhibit "China on Paper: European and Chinese Works From the Late Sixteenth to the Early Nineteenth Century." This is an exhibit of prints, illustrated books, maps and photographs at the institute's small gallery at the Getty Center. This collection is a marked contrast to the usual assortment of ceramics, lacquerware and textiles usually viewed in Asian Art Collections. The collection represent an exchange of ideas that takes place on paper over the centuries.

GuestIf the Getty proposal is approved I would push to have my students visit and do a write up on the exhibit.
Another great lesson idea, have your students visit a museum much like the PVIS students visited the Gean Autry Museum last Year and have them do a write up on how the Chinese immigrants adapted to early American life. Great idea for History of Geography classes, not so good for math.May 15, 2008 at 3:21 pm #32227Anonymous

GuestSounds like an excellent opportunity to appreciate more Chinese art. I was impressed and wowed by the Sunrider collection. There will always be a clearer impression when you can see artifacts up close. And so close to our district. Thanks for the detailed information about the San Francisco exhibit.
