China's coal mines are among the most dangerous in the world. More than 4700 Chinese coal miners died last year - a rate of nearly 13 a day."Coal mine owners will push their workers harder and harder to extract more coal and make more money, and unfortunately safety just gets left behind," In the worst accident this year, 172 miners were killed in August when their mine in eastern China's Shandong province flooded after a nearby river burst its banks.
All the above was written in today's newspaper, as a U.S. History teacher all i can think of is that this sounds a lot like what took place in America during our industrial revolution. I hope the Chinese can stir up enough muck in the world papers to obtain some workers rights and fix these horrid conditions.

I love the Huntington Gardens! There isn't much better than walking with your small boy while marveling at the roses, then the cherry blossoms, the rock garden, the bonsai, etc... We ended up sitting on a bench in the recently completed Chinese garden looking at the koi and birds and smelling the blossoms, it was really quite lovely. Also, if you teach 7th grade or anything that has to do with world history get your students to visit the Gutenberg Bible in the main library hall, Huntington has quite an impressive collection of books and letters.
