    Happy Chinese (Lunar) New Year!!!
It is not only the year of the Pig, it is the Year of the Golden Pig.

The year of the pig (boar) comes every 12 years, but the year of the golden pig happens every 60 years. Why every 60 years? The reason is there are 12 zodiac signs/years that rotate with the 5 elements--earth, fire, water, wood, and gold.

Children born during this once every sixty years in the Chinese lunar calendar are supposed to have a prosperous and wealthy life. Sunday 2/18/2007 was the first day of the new lunar year. The celebration continues for about 10 – 14 days.

I wish you and your family a happy and prosperous new year…

    Hey Taw,

My family celebrates Chinese New Years, as well. My mom made food offering (roast duck, pork, stir-fry veggies, wine, desert, etc) to our ancestors and the family had to pray to the ancestors, wishing them well, and asking them to watch over the family. I'm a Christian, but I also participated with the praying to the ancestors. When I hesitated with the praying, my mom gave me the 'better do as you're told' look, so I prayed--[ritual propriety again!].

After the incense burned out, I wanted to eat some of the deserts, except I couldn't just take it from the table. I actually had to ask my ancestors for the food...

"Oh ancestors, please let me have this sesame bar..."

By the way, happy new year to you, too!

    Hey Taw,

I was just wondering if you could fill me in on what the year of the dragon entails. You seem very knowledgeable about Chinese Culture. Are you Chinese?

Maybe you and Samel can bring in articles used to celebrate Chinese New Year's. I would love to see pictures and maybe even hear about celebrations I could attend.

I can't wait to hear from you both.

    Happy Chinese New Year!

What year are you two from? What do these animals represent?

    Hi Ssamel,

Oh yeah, I completely understand about asking the ancestors for permission before eating food that is being offered.

My family celebrates Chinese New Year too, but this year, I seemed to be a bit behind because I didn't get all my Chinese New Year cleaning done before the new year.

Growing up, I never really understood why we had to make so many offerings and why my mom was super tense that everything was perfect. Now, being older and a little more educated in Confucianism and ritual propriety, I now understand my mom more.

    Hi,

Just wanted to say Happy Year of the Porker It's my wife's year - and a good year for having babies I'm told - 'Golden Pig Year' should be very auspicious for having bairns, says my sister-in-law. I'm not exactly convinced. As I'm a Snake, we're not supposed to be a great match...

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

That is quite interesting, did not realize there is a difference between the year of the pig and the golden year of the pig. Therefore anyone born within this time period, will only celebrate this year once in a lifetime, unless they live to a 120 years old/
    Thanks for sharing... SMILES~

    Hey Flores,

I was born in the year of the rooster (1981). I'm not sure what the rooster represents, but my father says that I like to peck and start trouble...kind of like a rooster, I suppose.

But then again, my dad is also born under the rooster (1945). =)

I think that it's actually Pig Year in the category of the element Metal - so I guess that a golden pig is better than one of iron, brass, or maybe aluminum? Next Metal Pig Year will be 2067...

While visiting San Fransisco this year to attend the California International Antiquarian Book Fair, my wife and daughter and I went to China Town. It's a fun place to visit, especially for the Chinese New Year. The restaurants and shops are alot of fun to eat and shop at and there are alot of good deals. If visiting during the Chinese New Year, one doesn't even need many directions if your anywhere near that part of town since all you have to do is walk towards the sound of the firecrackers which are a constant roar.
