KeymasterI don’t know if any of you saw the report on 20/20 that came out Friday the 15. It was about the body exhibit that is touring all around the U.S. I know that some months ago we had it here in the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park. I wanted to go because I heard that it was really good. Everything that has to do with the human body and I didn’t know but apparently it also has a pregnant lady showing the fetus in her womb. It really caught my attention when they said that the bodies that are used for such exhibits come from China and that there was a possibility that the bodies could be executed prisoners.
The report had some people that worked for such companies admitting that they have gone to many places were they just pick up the bodies. I can’t imagine that people can do such a thing regardless of the bodies being dead, and especially because the Asian culture like others have a strong believe in the afterlife and just paying respect for the dead. They are going after the people who are doing this illegally, and hopefully there can be a change on how the bodies are obtain.

GuestI saw the same report and am more intrigued at where the bodies for the show came from too. I dont like to jump to conclusions but I would like to know the actual source of these bodies. If they were donated bodies for such a purpose, then I have no problems with the exhibit. Otherwise, I'd object to the use of human bodies for this purpose.
Despite our objections to how the Chinese may be treating these bodies, in Western society, before human body donations to medical schools, bodies were exhumed from graves at night by medical students without the consent or knowledge of the families. The bodies were then used for their anatomy lessons. Obviously things have changed, but only in the last 100 years or so.

GuestI will also like to know how accurate the informants were while creating the report. Nobody admit it to it, and they all said that they were obtaining the bodies legally. I guess that what shocked me was that many of the bodies were from Asia and the fact that one of the bodies was that of a pregnant lady. In my opinion who would on their right mind donate their own body knowing that they are carrying a life, was that person planning on dying! It is just very shocking.

GuestI havent seen the Bodies exhibit that has Chinese plastinated models, but I wonder if it would be that difficult to figure out who they are. Their DNA is still in the bodies.
Secondly if they were executed prisoners from China, wouldn't we be able to tell from looking at the bodies? The primary method of execution in China is a bullet the back of the skull. This would result in a fractured, shattered, partially destroyed skull. The bodies are right there. Are there any problems with the skulls? Do we see any fractured pieces? I dont know.

GuestI don't remember the name of the lady who is actually fighting to stop the used of bodies from Asia. Also, during the report they said that many of the bodies were Asian. I know that a shot to the head or any other execution will probably show, I don't know. There are so many cover ups that anything can happen. I haven't been to the exhibit but will try to go when it comes back to LA.

GuestThe exhibit in LA is not the one in question. Body World or whatever it is called at the CA science center comes from German donated bodies.

GuestI did hear about the 20/20 report concerning this exhibition--I wonder if all the bodies were allocated with permission and if these bodies have some sort of records. China, I'm sure, has different regulation rules when it comes to this but I'm curious, with China being a Confucian culture, whether using bodies for such purposes is in line with their beliefs? Any thoughts?

GuestThat's the concern... There are no documents for these bodies being donations. Secondly, the factory where the bodies are created has no evidence either of where the bodies come from.

GuestThe concern is that nobody can find any documents that can track how the bodie came to the factory, and legal/illegal it is obtaining the bodies. I wanted to know what everybody else thought of since in most countries there is great respect for the death. I know that in my culture there is great respect for the death, and we have a big celebration for them every year.

GuestYes, that is why there is pending legislation by a Chinese CA assembly woman who wants to require that documents that there are donated bodies be shown before they can be imported and displayed here in the US.

GuestYes, and I hope that it happens soon, and if any of you have noticed the exhibit is coming to LA. Now that I've heard the report I am deginately going to go and see it. I've heard from others that it is very graphic, but if any of you have gone and seen it, do you think it is appropriate for eight graders? Our school needs to take at least two field trips and was wondering if its appropriate for the students.

GuestMy quick and biased response: It's Science. In other words, it's about the human body and nature. Although they are in different poses, it's just the human body. I'd ask for parent waiver forms if I were you beforehand.

GuestI saw the last 20/20 report on Japan and the killings of three girls, so far it has been two reports that portrait Asia in a negative way. The Olympics are happening in China, and within the country there seems to be opposition about it. I wonder if just because this big event is to happening soon and there is big controversy with in the country that the media now is bringing up all this negativity on Asia. Any thoughts on it?

GuestI saw the same 20/20 report. Although it does give a negative view of a particular rich playboy turned murderer, that pales in comparison the crimes that occur much more frequently here in the States. Murders in all of Japan dont even compare to Los Angeles. One of the major concerns of tourists from Asia (and Europe) to the US is our high crime rates. Knowing about one particular killer in Japan doesnt scare me. I'm more afraid to be here.

GuestYou're right the type of crimes that happen here in the U.S are much greater than in other countries. I just thought that with the Olimpics happening over there soon, showing the type of reports just gives Asia a negative look.
