China is known to be home to the world's longest continuous civilization. It was to have begun as a small group of farming villages that grew to be a nation that covers more that 3.5 million square miles. It also has a population of 1.2 billion people, and that is a lot of people. China has a great history, and a wonderful culture. The Chinese has made great contributions to the world. Almost every thing I buy says,"Made in China".
But with all of this contribution, China is a relatively closed society
since the Communist Revolution in 1949, and in recent years it has be gun to open its doors to the world, and now allowing us to learn more about it's fascinating culture.
Beijing was or maybe is still called the Forbidden City. I'm not sure, but a couple of my friends went there for a National Women for Peace Day Conference about two years ago.

My students are still fascinated by this great country. You are right about almost everything we buy is made in China. At times I wonder about how much China is willing to put at stake to continue in their quest for riches. A good example of this is how they forced their own people out off their land to put up structures in prepraration for the Olympics in Beijing. The Olympics will go on for a few months and will not return to China until probably another decade or so. Is it really worth the loss experienced by their countrymen? Will the Forbbiden City become a commercial city?
