"Mei Ling in China City" is a true story of a 12 year old who had problems during World War two in Los Angeles. The real life story was told to Icy Smith, the author of the book. and she decided to make a book and publish it. In the story , Mei Ling loses her friend, but she finds her, and she is able to write to her friend from her encampment. The paints andthe colors beautifuly depict the hardships and cross-cultural esperiences of the Japanese and the Chinese during this period.
This is a lovely book to read to American children to give them an idea of some of the history of the Japanese and Chinese in this country.
Even though I teach ancient world history I feel that this book is an excellent book to be experienced by young American children, especially those who are reading "On the Road to Manzanar", an Japanese encampment story.
