GuestI read your lesson plan and it looks good. What is the hat activity that you included there?

GuestPlease also check out my lesson plan on my website,

I have it in the handouts tab as the winter break extra credit assignment. I wanted the students to test this out before I use this as a full assignment in future years. I also have my powerpoints added to this which the students know as Chapter 4. Thanks.

GuestKevin,
This is an excellent lesson plan and something I would have enjoyed as a student of Chemistry. You have really addressed the multiple intelligences and critical thinking requirements. I am thinking this would be a great connection to an interdisciplinary effort between World or U.S. History (i.e. compare and contrast the Mississippi River) and an environmental science class. Your students would probably enjoy the NPR December '07 Yellow River reports by Rob Gifford and Andrea Hsu. The photo/audio overview would be a great link into your power point presentations.

GuestI really enjoyed all the components of your lesson plan. I am also curious about the "hats" part but I like all the culture aspects and it will be challenging in a Spanish class. I have a student in one of my classes from Peru and she told me about a month ago about he grandfather being Chinese. It reminded me of the huge overseas East Asian population in Latin America, especially in Peru. A restaurant called "W's" on PCH in Redondo Beach is owned and run by a Peruvian Chinese family. It would be great to have your class meet there and meet with the owners about their history and why they migrated. This might be an easy field trip.
As for your power point presentations. I am going to try to upload one of mine that you could use one day.... it's a "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" skeleton that you can put review questions in. This goes for everyone! It's really fun... I am going to go to the attachment and browse and it should let me upload the *.ppt.
It worked for me! Enjoy![Edit by="eamador on Jan 8, 11:40:04 AM"][/Edit]

GuestThanks for the NPR link. I heard part of the series on the radio when it was on the air. I can use them in my classroom. Thanks again

GuestThe Hats!
The Chinese Culture Club also gets together to do crafty things. One day we got together to make the pointy hats using newspaper and corn starch (paper mache) and they worked pretty well, all with a distinctive look, but not very long lasting. Finally we got a great deal ($1 each) and bought about 30 hats in China Town so we can use them when we want people to notice as from a distance, like when we sold orange chicken for Oktober Fest. Having an item that differentiates us from the rest is a must, most groups have just a T-shirt, we have pointy hats and its fun :o)(permission to share picture has been signed)[Edit by="pcampuzano on Jan 9, 3:22:51 PM"][/Edit]

GuestIn the unit that I have planned for my students is to prepare them for the Heritage unit that they are getting ready to read this quarter. My group of students are English Learners who needs a lot of scaffolding to make connections build schema and in so doing build interest which in turn will help them to better comprehend what they are reading. There are two stories in the unit that is based on Chinese culture so I needed to give them some background knowledge to help them in the making of personal connnections with the push or pull factors that influenced the decisions that the characters made in the stories.[Edit by="evillanueva on Jan 13, 5:06:51 PM"]This is the first time I am referring to my lesson plan. GuestThe lesson plan is very comprehensive. I liked the way you broke down the standards--since I teach elementary grades, it is interesting to see what gets covered in a high school class. The sources are informative and the lesson plans are well thought-out. It would be interesting to see what sort of student project can result at the end of this unit. How would students apply what they know and create something out of it? Would it be an art project or writings? What was most memorable for them?
