KeymasterOne of China's best -known monuments is the Great Wall. The wall was first built during the Qin Dynasty( 221-226B.C.) to keep invadors from coming into china from the north. Later , during the Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1388-1644), a major reconstruction of the wall was done. The purpose of this newly renovated wall was also to keep out invaders. This is the wall that still exists today.
The Great Wall is not one continuous wall, but many different sections with some gaps in between. Some, but not all, of these gaps are filled by mountains and impassable terrain. The exact length of the wall is unknown, but it is estimated to be around 1,500 miles(2,400 km) long. Sections are about 25-30 feet ( 7.6-9.1 m) high and consist of the wall itself, guard stations, and watchtowers.
It can be seen from low altitudes in Earth's atmosphere, it is not possible to see it from the moon.Sharad Chandra Shukla

GuestThe Great Wall of China "Wan -Li Qang -Qeng"as they call it was built over 2000 years by Qin Shi,first chinese emperor of Qin dynasty. This largest building construction played a vital role in protecting boundaries of china .Armies were staying along the wall as the first line of defense.Signal fires from the wall were used as early warning of an attack.Ming dynasty got it reconstructed later.

GuestDoes anyone know if the Great Wall ever actually did help prevent a "barbarian" invasion of China? I have read a lot of military history (less on China though) and is seems to me that none of the major invaders of China were even troubled by the wall, let alone actually stopped. Maybe the problem is that we only really hear of the successful invasions and not the ones that the wall helped stop. But I suspect the wall was really no more useful than the Maginot Line.

GuestThe Great Wall of China was maybe built with the intention of preventing invaders from coming in, but I don't think that it made much difference unless soilders were on it every day and every night. With a wall that long it might had been impossible to prevent invaders from coming in. Now days is just a great place for tourist to go an visit, who knows if it really helped prevent invaders from coming in.
