I was recently indulging myself in the lastest issue of People Magazine and found a very short, but interesting article about Japan's Princess Masako. I thought it was cool that even Japanese "gossip" is making it into American magazines. The article explored Princess Masako's worries about having a male heir to the throne, and how her sister in law's pregnancy is sparking that old debate about whether or not a female should be able to I can't even imagine how much pressure the Crown Princess is under. No wonder the she has gone into hiding and the media calls her a "caged bird". I find this situation quite interesting because while many politicians are saying it's time to change the law, there are many Japanese people who disagree for the sake of tradition. I guess the Japanese emperor's position is a traditional one, perhaps just for show because all the powers were stripped of the emperor after the new government fell into place after World War II. Is the Emperor simply a symbol of the tradition of Classical Japan?

Finding gossip about the Japanese royal family in People magazine is no surprise here. It seems to be another example, in this case, of the influx of cultural interest sparked from across the pacific. Seeing that in America, the closest thing we have to a "royal" family might be the first family or, gasp, Brangelina, most probably can't understand the traditional ties a country and it's people might have to a royal family as merely a symbol of the current, past or present glory of a nation. Especially in Japan, with it's strict adherence to and extreme value placed on traditions and rituals, I could see why most of it's citizens might be behind keeping the royal family right were it is - as a national piece of cultural pride and history of ancient Japan.
