I think that human nature is fundamentally good. --If not just for the mere preservation and continuation of the human race. From the time that we are very young, we seek approval and love which confirm our "goodness". This is what seperates us from mere animals and gives us the capacity to ponder on the existence of the soul. We can't assume that people are evil in nature because they have free will. This assumption debases humans to the ranks of dogs in need of training.

I think that I am clear on how each school of thought would answer this question with the exception of the Daoists.
Confucianists believe that people are evil but that you make them good through education. Mohists believe that humans are good by way of the principle of universal love. Legalists believe that humans are evil and are motivated only by fear of pain and love of pleasure. It is the Daoists who, it seems to me, do not address the question. Daoists say what we should strive for--harmony with nature-- but not what human nature is.
If someone has a better understanding, please respond!

What I have so far on the answer to that question:
Confucians: Children should be taught filial piety, reverence, respect for elders.
Mohists: Children should be taught to treat all their elders as they would their own fathers and mothers.
Daoists: They should be taught breathing exercises, simplicity, tolerance of individual differences, and the Supreme Way.
Legalists believe that children should be taught obedience to the law.

Breathing exercises! That is something I haven't tried. Do you have any more specific information about the breathing exercises? When are Daoist children taught these breathing exercises? Very interesting!
