Another recent addition to my class room library is "How my Parents Learned to Eat" by Ina R. Friedman. It is the story of two young people in love. He from the USA and she from Japan. They secretly learn how to in the other's eating styles. he with chopsticks and she with knife, fork and spoon. They surprise one another at a special dinner. It is a sweet story and illustrates the willingness to assimulate into one another's culture.

The story sounds like a great springboard for discussion! WOW. I can only imagine how my students would debate and discuss it all. I also think it could tie in with our readings from "Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens."

I read that book to my classroom also. Then the kids made huge food pyramids connecting different cultures. The students looked at menus (Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, American, and Indian) and found similarities and differences in each of them. They loved this lesson and they love learning about what different people eat.

It sounds like a cute and interesting story. This reminds me of the time when I came to U.S. It took me a while to get used to the culture difference between Taiwan and U.S.
