I am sure many of you have heard the controversy surrounding James Frey’s novel, A Million Little Pieces. I understand that this may be a stretch for the Asia institute forum
but I thought it would be fun to discuss the Tao book that is mentioned in his memoir. It is interesting that this book essentially replaced the AA 12 step book in Frey’s recovery. He explained that the messages in the Tao were easy to relate too and helpful in understanding his purpose in life and in the recovery stage. The other day I was in Borders and read through the Tao and found that I agreed… any thoughts?

Although, I never would of thought to relate this book to the Asia institute, you do have a point. This book was the fastest selling novel for a variety of age groups. It incorporates the Book of Tao throughout the ending of the story. It makes references to direct quotes found in the book. There has been a great deal of controversy about this book, from Opera, Larry King, the New, and the front pages of the papers around the United States. While the content of this book is not appropriate for school, I would bet that high school students have heard about this book and even some of them have read the book. It would probably spark interest to many students to make a relation to this book. The Book of Tao became a book of guidance to change the characters life into a positive way. It would be interesting to see how high school students would relate to some quotes found in this book

Thanks for the idea everyone! I am planning a unit on philosophy and religion...the Tao would be an excellent way to tie in primary source readings for my studnets. I also think it would be an excellent way to spark some discussion with my students! Thanks again, I will let you know how it goes!
