For a great and novel perspective on the Korean War take a look at Ha Jin’s new book War Trash. A Pulitzer Prize Finalist and a Faulkner Award Winner this book examines the life of a Chinese Peoples Liberation ‘Volunteer’’s experience in Korea and his subsequent stay in an American POW compound.
    A real good read!

Are there graphic descriptions of his experience in the POW camp? I would be interested in hearing some details.... 😀

Yes there are but the book is focused on the experiences of A Chinese PLA officer in a US controlled POW camp. The camp is located on an island southeast of Pusan.

Eric Hammel’s classic on the Korean War, The Frozen Choson, discussed how the poorly armed and ill- equipped PLA literally froze in place during Choson Reservoir campaign of the winter of 1950. Although this seems hard to comprehend, Ha Jin’s War Trash also talks about the freezing [ -40F] conditions and the ice statues. The statues were PLA soldiers and comrades of one of the POWs who recalls his experiences in January 1951 in the Choson region.

The book also goes into torture techniques and the gang like organization of the prisoners. Lord of the Flies or King Rat syndrome. Survival of the fittest and he who controls the gold [food] makes the rules.

i read resources that described Communists cells within the camps that killed prisoners who wanted to stay in the south or cooperate with the South Korean soldiers. Does this book mention these communist cells at all?
