What I keep coming back to, however, at least in my own mind, is the sad fact that the Chinese government official policy is one reflective of a government who can not trust its citizenry to make well-informed, "good" decisions on it's own (despite the free-flowing access to unfettered information one will find on the internet). Paternalism at its finest.

In the article "Ridding China of Bad Customs" there were some interesting concerns from the intellectuals. As referenced in the article: foot binding, opium addiction and slave girls, were the issues keeping China from achieving its goals.
Although all three of these practices would be to graphic in nature to share with Kindergarten students I would have a discussion with them about customs. In conjunction with the unit I have planned to go over daily communication in a family setting and proper etiquette when meeting a friend or elder.

The Long March would appeal to students because it shows a group of people that are like them and go through tremendous efforts to achieve their goals and to be heard.
This would be an example of something that I could share with my class as to relate to 'working together' which is a unit we do in Open Court. Then ask them to think of an example of when they work together and how they might impact the future like the people from the Long March.
