Hi everyone,
At our next session on Monday, 12/3, Professor Samuel Yamashita will discuss the causes and consequences of the Pacific War from the Japanese perspective, and will be highlighting the human aspect of the conflict through excerpts from his book, “Leaves from an Autumn of Emergencies.” A collection of translated diaries, the book chronicles the experiences of ordinary Japanese who lived through the war in their own words.
We will be focusing on the home front, so please take some time to review the diaries of Tamura Tsunejiro (81-130), Takahashi Aiko (161-190), Maeda Shoko (221-234) and Manabe Ichiro (235-266). The diary of Nakane Mihoko (267-307) is included as a supplemental reading for your interest.
If you need Professor Yamashita's reading, you may access it as individual .pdf file attachments in the subsequent postings. The file is large, so it was necessary to break it down into six parts.
