    "The Top Ten Things" article actually looks pretty useful, even if it is a bit short. It is a great introduction to Korea, and as part of the purpose of this class is to look at perceptions and clarify them this is a great jump off point. I used it in my lesson plan, especially the section entitled "Korea is Not New". This is a brief, but surprisingly comprehensive history. Yes, I understand the irony of calling such a short section on the country comprehensive especially when the selection specifies the length of the country's history.

    It tends to be in the best interest of a leader that the populace is happy and prosperous. That is intricately aligned with power unless despair become so much the norm that people don't know the difference. That is one of the benefits of a global society, that you can easily see how other society's work and what they have. This is one of the motivations to stifle communication with the outside world, things we see some countries doing even today. This is why the real nasty dictators stand out, because there are fewer of them because it doesn't work as a system.
