KeymasterAs the editor of an online magazine devoted to international animal protectionism, I receive emails from around the world. The following message is from a Chinese man, identifiable only as "Wolf," regarding Chinese treatment of dogs. Wolf originally sent me a shocking, sad weblink depicting Chinese officials torturing and killing puppies and dogs for an unknown reason. Wolf and I exchanged several emails on the topic, the first of which appears below, unedited, true to his voice.
Hi Robin
Somebody post it on the web and I just saw it. I think this is very rediculas and terrible. So I send it out and report it. I don't know where the information is coming from but if you want to know may be I can try and ask for you.
Recently in China, there do have a lot of these things happen. For example: The government has pass the law that all dogs must be register and they charged 1500 RMP for one dog. But the basic salary for a person in China is around 600-800 RMP. How can they afford it??? The people of Animal department just check on the rich people residential area. I have a friend who know the people in the department tld him that mostly they aim for rich people for money and poor people for dogs. Why I say that............ For example: I am the rich people or people in government and I do like a poodle dog but I don't want to spend 3000-7000RMP and I know a person who has this dog, so I give the people in the department some money or do favourite for them then they will go to that person and arrest this dog and give it to me. Since the fees for the license is very expensive and sometimes they cannot afford it, so they just let it go.
Also the place they kept the dogs are sucks. I know a peron who just have his dog back with psycological problem. The reason is they don't feed those dogs properly. The ffod that they used to feed dogs is corn powder with water. If dogs want to eat the corn powder they have to finish drinkimg the water first as corn powder is at the bottom of the pot. They won't mixed it well. They kept big dogs and small dogs all in one cell. They have the police dogs in the cell to watch them. Just think about it police dogs are mostly German Sheperd. Therefore under this circumstances the dogs are crazy when they are out. Of course if you have connections and willing to pay more money, you can have your dogs back soon.
The actual abuse cases is very common in here.............. if nobody come to pay for the dogs that they arrested, they will have them starve to die. Just imagine when all dogs kept in a place and no food and water, they will bit each other and nobody clean up the mess. What it comes to the end is disease problem.
By the way, if you need any information or help. I will help you if I can do it. As I really want to help those animals. I also reported these to the Animal Department and still no reply. That is how Chinese treat animals.Best Regards

GuestFollowing are additional email exchanges resulting from Wolf's initial complaint and contact regarding dog abuse in China.
Hi Robin
The website "bbs.shangdaot.com" is business kind of website for people to discuss business topic. The video chip has been placed under Entertainment catagory----------> funny video------>abuse dogs.
I don't know why people can do such things. Well I will try to see if I can get more information on it.
Best Regards

GuestAnother email from Wolf regarding homeless dogs: the Chinese version of an animal shelter
Hello
How are you?
At these days, China has increased their ability to catch more dogs. I have enclosed some photos to you to prove how government treat dogs. How they kept them in Cages and kill them. You can see police standing in there too. These photos was taken in Beijing and Sezchuan. It tells how they treat those homeless dogs and no-license dogs. Dogs will be killed within 7 days if noone come and take them. The fees as I have said before is 1500RMB + 200RMB/day, which is a lot of money. The basic salary for a person is 600-800RMB/month. Just think about it, how people can afford. These increase a lot of homeless dogs these days.
Hope we can awake them as these is not right. I fell sorry for thoses dogs. These things will never happen in our countries (western cultures).Best Regards

GuestMy last email exchange with Wolf. Not only does he mention the terrible situation regarding dogs, but the environment and upcoming Olympics. Fascinating.
Hello Robin
How are you? I am willing to answer your questions as long as my personal information is confidential.
First, I was in China right now and I am doing trading business. All the information and pictures are from website of China. Is too bad that you don't read Chinese, if not you can get all these informations. The members of this website are animal lovers and they feeback a lot of their experience to let people know the truth through internet. The photos that I sent was someone taken hiddenly when they see how government kill them. I guess that person may know somebody that work in there so she can take this pictures privately and post it on the website, to tell the truth.
During my stay in China, I can see a big gap between gernaerations. For example, the education problems, do you know that a lot of children have no education in some of the countries. Of course in cities, people will have education. But overall, China still has a large populations that don't even know how to read and write. Under this circumstances, do you think that this people will know what is humane rights, or how to treat animals. The proverty is also serious problems and I think is geting more serious. As China economics are growing so fast, more than 80% of the populations will have problem to catch up with the knowlege. All these things, China will not allow outside people to know. Whatever you search on the website as long as it is in English or in government, they just only tell good things. Eventhough, may be they think is not right but what can they do?
In china, I can feel what is life of Jungle. The reason is you can only survive if you are strong. There is no free lunch. For example, life is worthless in China. Why I say that, because there has been a company in China who is doing Chemical business and they pollute the water of that county. Afters years, people of that county were sick. So far as I know, that company closed down but the people in that county have no compensation or benifits from Government.
If you ask me how long it take for them to change, I would say may be another 50 years. Wait till young people to get more education or culture interactions among east and west.
Of course, Chinese will care about how others people see these pictures. Just tell you another example, remember when countries try to get the projects of Olympic in Bejing. All those green grass are spray with colours. No outside provinces autos are allow to enter Beijing. Do you know that China still has traffic problems especially in Beijing. People do waste a lot of times on Traffic. So I don't know how they can solve these problems during Olympic. Hope they can do a good job at that time.
Another things China allowed eat dogs. They have restaurant that cook dogs meat. But I never try as I think that is suck and horrible. So I will not surprise if they used their furs too. But the way they kill dogs are not right. They abuse them to die or starve to die which is very unhumane.
I know ark Online through web search. I also sent those pictures to other animal protection society. I really hope that we can stop their way of treating dogs especially when I found out how they kill them after 7 days if nobody come and take them. Whatever they charge are unreasonable, so I guess they consider these only as business. Today I heard news in Beijing, more than 19000 dogs are catch till now. I fell sorry for them. So just think about it if government treat dogs like these, so you think Chinese people know how to treat dogs and know what is humane. If western countries charged license fees more than the monthly income of populations. I guess there will have no dogs anymore. right?
If you came to China, you can feel by your own. By the way if I am still in China, we can meet and I can show you around. Just e-mail me and let me know when you come.Hope the information can help on your project
Best Regards

GuestThe following images depict a Chinese animal "shelter." The images are sad and disturbing.

GuestJay Long, a Chinese American businessman, says the following about animal protection in China.
Animal rights in China do not exist. Life, outside of the big cities, is still survival for most of the population. Politically, Hong Kong traded its social freedom for its financial freedom when it was returned to China. The rest of the country has followed suit.
He calls the situation for non-human animals in China "appalling."

GuestI found a research paper about "Dying for Fur" It is a report on the Fur Industry in China. The researcher talked about how they raise fox, dogs, and raccoon in the farm and slaughter them for fur. China is the largest fur exporter in the world. If you are interested reading the research paper, you may down load it. I post an attachment.[Edit by="ganderson on May 8, 5:58:18 PM"][/Edit]

GuestThanks so much for the report. Yes, the fur situation is truly sad. Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) recently launched an undercover investigation on the fur trade, specifically the origins of fur trimmed garments in the U.S. (many mislabeled as "faux" or "racoon" but are, in fact, dog and cat fur). The most heinous aspect of the fur issue is the cruelty and slaughter of dogs or cats--cruelty that defies any sense of humanity or conscience.

Guest5/12--Monday's powerful initial quake struck near Wenchuan County, according to China's State Seismological Bureau. Wenchuan is home to the Wolong Nature Reserve, the country's most famous panda reserve. I'm sure more information will be coming out in the weeks ahead whether the animals and their habitat are disrupted.

GuestIn Korea, I was devastated by the sight of dead dogs, on the road to the butcher. Identical in their large size and the color of their fur--a brownish/black--the loss of the dogs' lives affected me greatly, as they were a sharp contrast to the proliferation of pet stores and little pure breds seemingly taking over big cities such as Seoul and Pusan.
