I just purchased two beautiful books on E. Asian architecture and interior design, "China Modern" by Sharon Leece and "Houses of Asia" published by Feierabend. I'm developing a growing interest in East/West design and architecture. The "China Modern" book features modern homes from Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong designed by leading architects and designers. These homes are not sterile modern minimalist structures, but instead combine the best of Chinese classical culture and aesthetics with the latest international perspective to create stunning cutting-edge interiors that are uniquely Chinese. I highly recommend this particular book. "Houses of Asia" favors more of the sleek modern sophistication of minimalism. Some of the featured homes are a bit too stark for my tastes, but there are some unique creative elements that are inspiring.
Another remarkable (and pricey) book is "The Thai House" by Ruethai Chaichongrak, Somchai Nil-Athi, Ornsiri Panin, Saowalak Posayanonda, Michael Freema. It goes beyond the usual pictures of Thai houses with steep arching roofs. The book displays and talks about the marriage of function, beauty, and nature within Thai architecture.
