Columbia University has set up an amazing site full of VERY useful resources found at http://afe.easia.columbia.edu/

It includes really great timelines divided by country and tons of information divided up by time period and/or country. For me, the highlight of the site has to be the database of Recommended Teaching Materials link in which you can search for material based on country, time period, type, subject or keyword. Some of the materials are more useful than others. As an English teacher, the most useful section under the database was the Masterworks of Asian Literature in Comparative Perspective index divided by genre. If studying lyric poetry for example, I can go into this site and find a list of Asian lyric poems.

This site should just be getting better. Under construction are sections on maps, lesson plans, and cartoons and illustrations.

Also check out the Multimedia Units on Asian topics. I checked some of the videos on Modern Japan and find it excellent! I highly recommend them! They are easy to understand, well edited and, most importantly pithy. The only problem is the resolution-- the picture is actually quite tiny. I contacted the webmaster to see if they can do anything about the picture quality. Otherwise, this site is a GREAT resource.
