In the interest of peaceful relations between the United States and China, the Communiqué of 1978, states the wish of both countries to reduce the danger of international military conflict: "Both countries agree neither should seek hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region and each is opposed to efforts by any country or group of countries to establish establish such hegemony neither is prepared to negotiate on behalf of any third party or to enter into agreements or understandings with the other directed at other states." This is a large commitment clearly aiming to avoid possible situations such as the Korean war, or worse.
