This lecture gave me the foundation of information that I was missing. In order to understand modern Japan you really need to understand the Meiji transition and the hierarchy of society in the 1700's and 1800's. I had no idea there was such a firm caste system. I was particularly fascinated with the descriptions of the outcasts. The fact that the medical doctors could assimilate among all the different parts of society was especially interesting. I have always heard of Samuri, but the in-depth description really explained the importance of this class to me.
Professor Pitelka is a great lecturer with a wonderful sense of humor. Thank you so much for bringing him in to speak to our class.
