I didn't know that the Emperor held out so long b/c he thought we would commit the same atrocities on the Japanese (and him) that he perpetrated on the Koreans and the Chinese. That makes sense. Military strategist believed that we would have to fight on the home island of Japan all the way up to Tokyo. Truman estimated too many causalities and authorized the bomb. So they are not mad at us about that b/c we did pull a "rape of Nanking" on them, let them keep their Emperor, their names and helped them rebuild their country.
I was surprised to hear just how much the U.S. gave up in exchange for a peaceful foothold in Asia. Kind of a Marshall Plan of the Pacific; No war reparations, No protectionism against Japanese imports for 30 years. Is that a better deal than we gave Europe?
